The seven parts of this book do not require major elucidation. The seventh-- The Garden of Bifurcating Paths-- is a police story; its readers attend to the execution and all of the preliminary details of a crime, the motives of which are not ignored but will not be understood, I expect, until the final paragraph. The others are fantastical; one, The Lottery of Babylon-- is not totally free of symbolism. I am not the original author of The Library of Babel; those who are curious of its history and of its prehistory may find truth on page 59, which records the heterogeneous names of Leucipo, of Lasswitz, of Lewis Carroll, and of Aristotle. In The Circular Ruins, all is unreal; in Pierre Menard, Author of Quixote it is his destiny that the protagonist will impose on himself. The names of the writers that are attributed are not too distracting, but they are not arbitrary; they are a diagram of a mental history...

Mejor procedimiento es simular que esos libros ya existen y ofrecer un resumen, un comentario. Así procedió Carlyle en Sartor Resartus; así Butler en The Fair Haven; obras que tienen la imperfección de ser libros también, no menos tautológicos que los otros. Delurious and impoverishing labor is the composer of great books; it is the fifty page explanation of an idea whose perfect oral exposition takes only a few minutes. A better proceture is to imitate those books which already exist, and to offer summary and commentary. This is the procedure of Carlyle in Sartor Resartus; of Butler in The Fair Haven; works which contain the imperfections of the books they imitate as well, no less tautological than those works. More reasonable, more inept, more lazy, I have more preferred to write notes than to write imaginary books. This is Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, and the Examination of the Works of Herbert Quain.
